Pensioner airlifted to hospital after head-on crash

An 84-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after a head-on crash on the A426 near Dunton Bassett yesterday afternoon (Monday).

The man suffered leg, arm and chest injuries in the crash at about 1.30pm, which involved his silver Chevrolet Kalos, a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a white Vauxhall Vivaro van.

The Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) was requested because his injuries meant he required transport to a major trauma centre.

The helicopter landed in a nearby field and was given pain relief by paramedics.

His fractures were splinted and paramedics and administered medication to help stem blood loss, said the WNAA.

He was then flown to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire for treatment by the trauma team, it said.

Police said this afternoon (Tuesday) the man was in a stable condition.

The driver of the Vauxhall Corsa received minor injuries and was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, but was discharged soon after.

The driver of the Vauxhall Vivaro was uninjured.

The crash caused major tailbacks for motorists using the A4304 and A4206 yesterday afternoon.

Officers from Leicestershire Police’s serious collision investigation unit are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Constable Ady Keeble, who is investigating the incident, said: “Both the Chevrolet and Vauxhall Vivaro were travelling along Lutterworth Road towards Dunton Bassett, from Lutterworth, when the collision happened, and the Vauxhall Corsa was travelling in the opposite direction.

“It’s important that we get all the information we can about the collision and that’s why we want to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident. If you saw what happened or saw any of the cars prior to the collision please get in touch.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact DC 506 Ady Keeble on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 0506.
