BROWNIES from the 5th Market Harborough unit visited Ash Tree Vets in Harborough to learn more about animal care for their Friend to Animal badge.

The 13 well-behaved Brownies aged between seven and nine took a tour around the facilities at the Northampton Road practice.

Partner Nick Turner introduced the Brownies to the work of a vet and asked the group some questions to test their knowledge of animal care.

A mock operation was set up in one of the operating theatres using Truffles the toy dog and the Brownies were shown a selection of X-rays, including a dog that had swallowed a sock.

The visitors got to see ultrasound equipment in action and a mock consultation where Lily the lurcher was examined by Mr Turner and the children were able to listen to her heart using a stethoscope.

Tawny Owl Emma Parr, who accompanied the girls on their visit with Brown Owl Lynda Clark, said: “The Brownies are working towards their Friend to Animal Badge, which will be completed at the end of the term. The next task will be to find out about endangered animal charities and select one to hold a fundraiser for. Our last fundraiser raised £90 for the air ambulance and we are hoping to raise even more this time.”

Mr Turner said: “The visit was a huge success. I was very impressed with the Brownies’ knowledge and it was a pleasure to have them at the practice.”
