A FREE course in Lutterworth is aiming to combat debt and get people on top of their household finances.

The CAP Money course is being run by members of Lutterworth Community Church, who said they aim to help the community beat the recession and tackle rising debt.

Several community church members have been given specialist training by UK charity Christians Against Poverty.

Now they are offering the short course with the aim of ‘putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure’.

Money coach Pete Huskinson, who will be leading the CAP Money sessions, said: “With households feeling the squeeze on their disposable income, we’ve all got to get a bit more savvy about our money to get through these tough times.

“If you know how to save and budget effectively, it can have a hugely positive impact on the whole family.

“On average two people in every Lutterworth street are paying 80p of every pound of their income on debts, based on national statistics.”

Among other things, the course includes budgeting tips and teaches a system for using cash instead of cards while shoppping, as Mr Huskinson said people tend to spend about a third less when using cash.

The first course took place last Thursday at the Lutterworth Town Council office in Coventry Road from 7.30pm.

A Leicester credit union with a Lutterworth branch is opening its first community point in the town. The Clockwise Credit Union will have regular Thursday sessions between 10am and 1pm at the Methodist Church in Bitteswell Road.
