Harborough District Council is looking for stewards to assist with crowd management.

No previous experience is necessary, as briefings will take place regarding roles and responsibilities.

The council is particularly looking for people to help out in Lubenham, Foxton and Kibworth as well as Harborough.

It is a great opportunity to get involved in what is sure to prove a memorable day.

Anyone interested is urged to contact p.taylor@harborough.gov.uk or phone 01858 828282 for more information.

Leaflets are also being delivered to homes and business on the route to inform them of traffic and parking restrictions on the day.

During the relay, a rolling road closure will be used and parking restrictions will be in place along the route.

Roads will be closed off around 10 to 15 minutes in advance of the torch and will open again about 30 minutes later.

To reduce congestion, Leicestershire County Council is advising motorists to avoid using the A6 to Leicester from 5pm on July 2.

County Hall cabinet member Ernie White said: “The torch relay is an historic occasion and I’m sure residents will line the streets to celebrate the flame’s visit and be part of sporting history.

“It’s important to stress that with an event of this size, traffic disruption is inevitable but the approach is designed to minimise hold ups and ensure that the event keeps to schedule.

“Signs will be put up in advance to alert road users and marshals will be in place on the day to control traffic but we would urge everyone to read the leaflet, heed the advice and plan ahead.”

Following the Torch Relay Harborough is planning to continue the celebrations at a Torch Relay Community Village event being held at Symington’s Recreation Ground.

It will act as a showcase for the numerous sports and related groups which Harborough and the surrounding villages has to offer to residents and children.

If you would like your sports association or local group to feature at this event or the day in general by perhaps performing or exhibiting on the day, email wendysavill@btinternet.com
