TWO teachers from the Lutterworth and Harborough area scooped a £200,000 prize on prime-time gameshow The Million Pound Drop on Friday evening.
Jimmy Croucher (31), from Lutterworth, and his wife Lorna (28), who is originally from Harborough, started Friday’s show with the chance of winning up to £450,000.
The programme poses contestants multiple-choice questions and, if they are unsure of the correct answer, they are allowed to gamble some of the money on two or more answers – however they only keep money which was placed on the correct option.
On Friday night, the couple’s penultimate question asked them which music star’s real name was David Evans, and gave them three options Will.i.am, The Edge or Slash. They lost £250,000 of their money when they gambled it on the wrong answer – Slash – but had placed £200,000 on the correct answer, The Edge.
In their final question, they correctly guessed that here had been more general elections than Comic Relief events during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which began in 1952, 15 compared to 13.
Jimmy and Lorna, who were married in the summer, said they planned to buy a home with the money. Mr Croucher said he also planned to buy a split-screen VW camper van, as the couple had one at their wedding during the summer.
Speaking after the couple won their £200,000 prize, Million Pound Drop presenter Davina McCall said: “You played a blinder of a game and have been fantastic contestants.”
Since their success, the couple have been deluged with congratulation messages on social networking website Twitter.
Speaking at the start of Friday night’s show, Mrs Croucher said they had gone through a ‘weird’ week waiting to see how much money they would win.
She added: “There have been so many sleepless nights.”
Mr Croucher added: “It’s been really nice because we have had so many messages and tweets.”
Mr Croucher is a former PE teacher at Lutterworth College and now teaches at a school in Loughborough. Mrs Croucher teaches at the Bosworth Academy in Desford.
