New owners for ‘housing plan’ pub
A VILLAGE pub and restaurant which was threatened with closure less than two years ago is to be refurbished after being taken over by new owners.
The White Swan, in Shawell, is being managed by Ian Dew and his partner Samantha.
A planning application has been submitted to make a number of alterations to the 17th century building, which include improving the living areas as well as the pub and restaurant.
Previous owner Michael Walker had wanted to convert the village facility into housing, but Harborough District Council turned down the application, saying that Mr Walker had not proved that the pub was unviable as a business.
Mr Walker had run the pub for 15 years and said that his continued efforts to sell the building had been in vain.
His housing plans were opposed by villagers and Shawell Parish Council.
A decision on the improvements is likely to be made in the summer.
