New Look for centre?

A POPULAR clothing chain has been named as the latest store rumoured to be opening at the town's former Woolworths site.

New Look is the sixth firm linked to the unit on The Square in Harborough which has sat vacant since Woolworths closed its doors on January 3 after going into administration.

Speculation has been mounting over what will fill the vacant unit with companies such as pub chain JD Wetherspoon, supermarket giant Morrisons and Iceland all being connected to but ultimately denying interest in the site.

Last week, the unisex clothes retailer was linked with Harborough with nearby shopkeepers saying they had heard rumours the company was on its way to town.

A spokesman for the Weymouth-based business told the Mail it was always looking to expand but added that “no firm decisions to come to Harborough” had yet been made. The nearest New Look stores to Harborough are in Corby, Kettering and Fosse Park, Leicester.

John Hill, president of Harborough Chamber of Trade, said: “Harborough is fortunate that we don’t have as many empty shops as most town centres and it is good news that such a prominent ‘gap’ in the square could be filled. I’m sure that a New Look would be a big draw for many residents and give more reason for people to stay and shop in Harborough.”

In February, a tongue-in-cheek campaign was launched on social networking site Facebook to bring a nightclub back to the Woolworths site which it had been in the 1960s.
