A CHURCH in a Lutterworth area village will be ringing in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style after a £40,000 project to re-hang its five bells and add another new one came to fruition.

St Andrew’s church at Peatling Parva has managed to raise the huge sum through various fundraising events in the last two years.

The driving force of the campaign, tower captain Dilys England, said: “Bellringers are becoming a scarce commodity and we are anxious to not only keep the existing ringing band we have, but to encourage new people to join us, both young and old.

“We are thrilled that we have been able to achieve our dream of re-tuning and re-hanging the five existing bells as well as adding a new one – and we are ready to ring for the Jubilee celebrations with all six bells.”

A group of rookie bell ringers has already been recruited and is brushing up its skills by having weekly lessons.

Anita Higginson, secretary to the church council, who, with her husband Brian, donated the new bell to the church, said: “This is a great hobby for people of all walks of life – and much fun is had completing the learning curve in the village pub!”

A Songs of Praise style church service to re-dedicate the bells was held at the church on Sunday.
