A CHARITY backed by indie star Tom Meighan of Kasabian which sends support to British soldiers serving in Afghanistan has received a boost from the Kilworth Springs Golf Club.

Support Our Forces was set up several years ago after its founder Keith North began sending parcels containing everyday, but difficult to obtain, items like toothpaste and toiletries to his grandson – who at the time was serving with 9 Para in Afghanistan.

He began sending more parcels which were distributed to soldiers serving on the frontline and soon his generosity snowballed so that he was organising events to raise money to fill even more parcels.

Mr North died last year, but the charity has been continued by members of his family.

His son Wayne visited Kilworth Springs Golf Club last week with Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan and Leicester singer/songwriter Jersey Budd to accept a cheque for £1,800 from the club.

Wayne said: “Kilworth Springs Golf Club captain Terry Redman selected us as his chosen charity for the year and it looks like they will have raised about £6,000 for us by the end of the year – so we’re really grateful.”

Wayne said the charity’s remit has spread since it was founded, and while it still sends parcels other activities include visiting injured soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham to give them food, making donations to the Royal British Legion and buying facilities for a care home in Eyres Monsell where a number of ex-servicemen live.

The charity is also supported by the Dog and Gun pub in Whetstone, where an annual fun day is held.
