MP boundaries shake-up set to impact on district

THE BOUNDARY Commission has forged ahead with proposals to add Lutterworth, Broughton Astley and surrounding villages to the Daventry constituency.

The proposed change was first put forward in September last year as the commission attempts to cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600 by 2015.

It would see Lutterworth lose Conservative member Andrew Robathan as their MP. The MP for the Daventry constituency is fellow Tory Chris Heaton-Harris.

The proposals drew opposition Lutterworth residents as well as the South Leicestershire Conservative Association (SLCA), who argued Lutterworth has nothing in common with neighbouring Daventry.

But in its latest revision of the proposals, published last week, the commission said following ‘careful consideration’, it had decided not to alter these plans, albeit it now wants to call the new constituency Daventry and Lutterworth.

Following the initial proposals last year, the SLCA came up with alternative plans which would have seen Market Harborough sharing an MP with Daventry, but these were thrown out by the commission.

In the north of the district counter-proposals by the Lib Dems which would have absorbed parts of Harborough district and Melton into a large ‘Vale of Belvoir’ constituency were also rejected.

There are no proposals to change the Harborough constituency, held by Edward Garnier MP since 1992, in the commission’s latest revision.

The Rutland and Melton constituency held for more than 20 years by MP Alan Duncan, and which includes villages in the north of Harborough district, will also remain the same.

Mr Duncan said: “It was clear to anyone with even the slightest local knowledge that the suggestion was quite frankly insulting and showed no appreciation for the well-established links within the current constituency and its strong local character.

“I have been proud to represent both Rutland and Melton for over twenty years and I hope that we will now be able to put to bed the suggestion that the two belong anywhere other than together.”
