Last ditch bid to save town cinema scheme
CAMPAIGNERS hoping to turn Harborough's former Kwik Save premises into a cinema are this week pleading for a stay of execution on plans to demolish the building.
When the application is put before Harborough District Council planners on Tuesday officers will recommend approval of proposals to partially demolish the former supermarket and replace it with shops and retirement flats.
But campaigners say they will plead with councillors to defer the decision for a month to allow them more time for cinema developers to hold a crunch meeting with the building’s owners Alislane to discuss last-ditch plans for a cinema and multi-media complex at the site.
This plan, proposed by South Leicestershire College and The Light cinema group, would include classrooms, a lecture theatre, art gallery, youth centre, cafe and three-screen cinema, plus a river-facing restaurant and 16 two-bedroom retirement flats.
Harborough cinema campaigner Alastair Campbell said he believed this would be more profitable for Alislane, adding: “We just want to buy a little more time so we can put the business case to Alislane. If they’re not interested after that, then fine.”
Mr Campbell appealed for those in favour of a cinema for the town to attend the meeting to show support.
It takes place at the council chamber in Adam and Eve Street at 6.30pm.
