PUB landlord Andrew Southerden has gone overboard with his plans to mark the forthcoming Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
Mr Southerden, landlord at the Coach & Horses in Kibworth, has unveiled a re-launch with a difference – by turning his pub into a ship.
All decked out for the occasion, the pub has a new name as well as a new look – HMS Coach & Horses.
Since last October ‘Admiral’ Southerden has had much of the village working towards the transformation, which sports funnels, life rafts, illuminated portholes and a bow.
It weighs in at 210 tonnes, measures 75ft by 40ft and has involved hundreds of hours of work by people throughout the community.
Mr Southerden says the completed article is now standing in dry dock, awaiting its official launch on June 3 by broadcaster and historian Michael Wood.
He said: “It will join thousands of boats across Britain in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee.
“We are expecting over 2,000 people when we host a massive street party and ‘regatta’ outside the pub.
“There will be live music and a nautical fancy-dress competition. Foot passengers are also welcome to come and enjoy the celebrations!”
4The Leicester Road pub is hosting a Mexican buffet on Saturday to help raise money for this summer’s Kibworth Relay for Life event.
Kibworth Improvement Team (KiT) and the Coach & Horses have entered a team for the big Cancer Research fundraiser in July and they want to kick things off in style.
The event is also being held as a pre-launch bash for the pub’s Royal Jubilee regatta.
The buffet evening will also feature a DJ and a disco.
Mr Southerden said: “After the huge success of the Mexican fundraising night for Ruth and Scott Hamilton, I thought it would be a great opportunity for everyone to once again enjoy a Mexican buffet at the pub.
“After the enormous amount of compliments about our new chef’s dishes, come along and enjoy his buffet.”
There will also be a raffle and ‘open the box’ game to help raise funds for Race for Life.
Tickets cost £12.50, from the pub. Food will be served from 8pm and music will start at 9pm.
