A woman who is more used to singing in the shower than on the stage helped make money for Cancer Research through a talent show.

Jennifer Barker, who lives in Lutterworth, put her talents to the test on Saturday at the national final of Tesco Distribution’s Got Talent.

The talent show helped to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Baker represented Tesco Distribution Centre on Saturday at Daventry Court Hotel.

She battled it out with 19 other acts from across the country for a £1,000 prize at the gala fundraising event.

Although Jennifer had already held off competition from other aspiring stars to reach the national final with her incredible singing, she fell at the last hurdle on Saturday evening as she failed to make the top three.

Staff, family and friends were able to play a role in deciding who was crowned the winner by using a text-to-vote system in the run up to the event as well as on the night itself.

Each vote saw £1 donated to Cancer Research UK.

Speaking ahead of the final, Jennifer said: “I’ve been with Tesco for 15 years and live in Lutterworth with my husband Martin and daughter Cerys.

“Until I made it to the final, my singing experience had been limited to singing in the shower!

“Thanks to everyone who supported me and more importantly support Cancer Research UK, which will be the real winner at the final.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in an exciting fundraising event, have fun and help support Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists beat cancer at the same time.”

In its second year, the competition, which is open to Tesco Distribution staff and their family and friends, aimed to raise £60,000.

This will contribute towards the £10 million record target that Tesco staff around the country hope to raise for Cancer Research UK which is its charity of the year.

The money raised by Tesco stores, distribution centres and offices will be spent on supporting 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects in local communities across the UK.

Tesco and Cancer Research UK also aim to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease and reduce people’s anxiety about cancer.
