Help to tackle food poverty this weekend

A SUPERMARKET in Harborough is holding a food drive this weekend to help tackle food poverty.

Sainsbury’s, in St Mary’s Place, is encouraging shoppers to donate items as part of its Million Meals Appeal. The nationwide food-drive is being run by Sainsbury’s and FareShare, the national charity tackling hunger across the UK.

The second annual Million Meal Appeal will benefit more than 700 charities and projects across the UK.

Last year saw food amounting to 4,000 meals’ worth donated at the Harborough store.

It was the biggest food donation in the entire UK.

Harborough MP Edward Granier is backing the appeal and will be at the Harborough store on Saturday at 10am.

He said: “I’m really proud to be supporting the appeal. I know last year’s appeal at the Harborough store was a great success and highlighted the generosity of local residents and how by working together, we can tackle food poverty in this country.

“I hope Sainsbury’s customers can join me in getting behind the appeal and add an extra item to their shopping this weekend in support of this very worthwhile initiative.”
