A group which helps people with learning disabilities lead independent lives is looking to attract more members to join its monthly meetings.

The Sunshine Group works with organisations such as banks and bus companies to make day-to-day life easier for those with such disabilities.

It is hoping to attract more members to attend its meetings at the Roman Way Community Centre between 7pm and 9pm on the first Tuesday of each month. Volunteers are also needed to help with transport for the group.

The group formed with the help of Big Lottery cash three years ago is currently involved in a project to make it easier for people with learning disabilities to use buses.

Group members have been working with bus firm Arriva to teach drivers how to better interact with people with a learning disability to make travel easier for them.

Andy Taylor, who helps organise the group’s meetings, said: “Transport is a big issue for people with learning disabilities. This will enable people with learning disabilities to travel safely on public transport.

“We are doing training with Arriva drivers to make sure they understand people with learning disabilities.”

Access to public transport for people with learning difficulties will be the focus of an event at Humberstone Gate from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Wednesday, March 6. It will be attended by The Sunshine Group and Arriva.

Mr Taylor said: “The next project that the group will be working on is looking to make banking for people with learning disabilities easier, and the group is hoping to find a bank they can work with to do this.”

For more information about the group or to volunteer to help with transport, phone Mr Taylor on 07738 486000.
