Help plan town’s Olympic torch fest

Jonathan Edwards showcases a prototype of the London 2012 Olympic Torch to be carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers.

The winning design connects the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay to each of the 8,000 Torchbearers and their community. The Torch's triangular, gold-coloured form is perforated by 8,000 circles representing the 8,000 Torchbearers and their stories of personal achievement and/or contribution to their local community which will be celebrated during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

PEOPLE are being urged to come along to a public meeting to suggest ways of celebrating the Olympic torch’s visit to the area.

During its tour of the country in the build-up to the start of the Olympic Games, the torch will be carried through Harborough on Monday, July 2, this year.

Now plans are being drawn up to organise some sort of celebration on The Square, Harborough, from about lunchtime onwards on that day.

It is thought the torch may arrive on its journey through the town during the afternoon.

Organisers of the Olympics will be releasing more details of the torch’s exact route through town and its timing later in the year.

Harborough Improvement Team and the district council are organising the public meeting to encourage people to come forward with ideas on what sorts of festivities to hold.

The meeting will be held at the Cygnet Room at the Three Swans Hotel in High Street, Harborough, from 6.30pm on Wednesday, February 8.

People from sports clubs, youth groups and other community organisations are being invited, especially anyone thinking of putting on some form of entertainment.
