AN ACTOR who played the role of an angry centaur in Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix came to a Harborough school to help teach dance.

Jason Piper who played the centaur Bane in the 2007 film visited Robert Smyth Academy on Monday last week (Oct 29) where he hosted a master class with young people there.

The event was made possible by dance teacher Sue Rosenbloom, who is known as Bloom to her students.

Jason initially trained with her in Leicestershire and was part of the Edinburgh Fringe First Award winning Company with a piece called Hey Joe! which Bloom created for Leicestershire Youth Arts.

He then trained at the London Contemporary Dance School before joining the Richard Alston Dance Company.

Jason played centaur Bane in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Bane is angered when Professor Dolores Umbridge tries to attack the centaurs and is among the herd who kidnap her and take her deeper into the Forbidden Forest.

In the novels by J K Rowling it is Bane who is angry with fellow centaur Firenze when he helps Harry Potter.

Jason was also the male lead in Matthew Bournes’ Swan Lake & Dorian Gray, and he has worked with Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera.

Jason said that working with Bloom had given him the skills and belief to make his mark in the arts.

He said: “I am delighted to be working with her students at the Robert Smyth Academy.”

As well as being a dancer, Jason has also had work as a choreographer, model and actor. He is also in a band called Creon.

Bloom said: “Obviously I am delighted that Jason, as a former student and now star of stage and screen, came back to pass on his amazing talents and experience to my students at Robert Smyth.

“I am extremely proud of both him and all of my students at the academy.”
