A MUM and dad who bought a box of old clothes at a Lutterworth auction were shocked to discover two used syringes in the bundle.

James (31) and Samantha Nock (23) bought the box of second-hand clothes at the EWC auction, which takes place at the Vedonis Works on Thursday evenings.

The weekly auction is run by the firm which manages Leicestershire’s waste sites and aims to sell off items which would normally be sent to landfill.

Mr Nock, who lives in Rugby, said he uses the auctions on a regular basis to buy items which he then cleans or repairs and then sells on.

He said: “I had bought the box of clothes on July 26 and they were just being stored in my lounge.

“When I went to sort through them this week I was shocked to find the syringes.

“One was in the pocket of one of the jackets and another was just in the bundle. They had blood inside them.”

Mr Nock’s wife Samantha said what was even more worrying for the couple was that their two-year-old daughter Lili could have found the syringes.

She said: “Sometimes she comes into the room and plays while we’re sorting through what we’ve bought. She could have found them at any time.”

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire County Council explained that EWC is its waste site contractor.

She added: “We’re sorry to hear of the customer’s experience.

“We work closely with EWC and systems are in place to ensure that items sold at auction are checked. In this instance, we’re satisfied that checks did take place but EWC are carrying out a full investigation and will address any issues raised.”
