Go bananas for Fairtrade goods

A man will walk through Lutterworth with an inflatable banana strapped to his back to demonstrate the town’s commitement to Fairtrade.
Philip Jones will take part in the unusual stunt tomorrow (Friday) to help mark Fairtrade fortnight.
Mr Jones, who is secretary of Lutterworth Fairtrade Steering Group, said: “My plan is to walk around Lutterworth visiting all the people who have pledged to support Fairtrade in town. There must be about 14 or 15 of them.
“I’ll be starting at the Travelodge in the morning and head into town visiting the various shops and churches.”
More of the profits from the sale of Fairtrade goods, like fruit and coffee, go back to the farmers or producers who make them.
Lutterworth was granted ‘Fairtrade Town’ status in 2008 after more than a year of hard work by the steering group.
The group had to have promises from a certain number of businesses and shops in the town before it could be granted.
Fairtrade Fortnight, which started on Monday and runs until Sunday, March 10, is held annually to raise awareness of the cause.
“The slogan this year is ‘Take a step’,” said Mr Jones.
“So my idea is to take a step in Lutterworth and let people know how many places in the town support Fairtrade.”
The group is also holding information points in supermarkets during the fortnight.
They will be held at the Co-op, in George Street today and Waitrose on Saturday and Wednesday mornings.

Hello Michael. I my capacity as Secretary for Fairtrade in Lutterworth I am writing to tell you of our plans for Ft fortnight. We are holding information sessions in the Co-op and Waitrose during the fortnight which we hope will increase people’s understanding of the way Ft operates and the way we purchase goods in this country affects lives in the developing world. I am also hoping to utilise the Ft slogan of “taking a step” to walk between the various Ft supporters in Lutterworth, probably with an inflatable banana strapped to my back. That will be on the 1st March. If your photographer could cover any of that it would be great. I can give more info for copy.
Also Lutterworth Lions are supporting the High School in Lutterworth with a Soccer and Learning activity in South Africa. 15 Students are going to a school in South Africa for a week to help with literacy teaching coupled with a soccer programme. Lions are donating £100 per student and would like to arrange some press coverage for this. Again if your photographer could be around to cover this it would be great. Possibly we could arrange to cover both on the same day. Let me know.
