THE FUNDRAISING in Claire’s memory reached an incredible milestone on Friday when it topped the £1 million mark.
Claire had been running the London Marathon to raise money for Samaritans – a charity her mother has supported as a volunteer for 24 years – and had collected about £500.
But the total rocketed in the days following her death as tens of thousands of people from all over the globe, moved by the tragedy of Claire’s death, made donations to her JustGiving page.
The total, including Gift Aid which the Samaritans can claim back, reached £1 million a few minutes after 5pm on Friday.
Since then, the total has crept up to more than £1.1 million.
Speaking at Claire’s funeral yesterday (Wednesday), Samaritans’ chief executive Catherine Johnstone said: “Once the family have had a period of privacy, we will be sitting down with them and talking about how we can maximise the legacy left by Claire.
“We will make sure to tell everyone how they have made a difference further along the line.”
