A FORMER Spitfire pilot was given a warm welcome when he returned to his old school.

Tony Pickering, a former Spitfire pilot who also flew a Hurricane in the Battle of Britain, visited Robert Smyth Academy on Friday.

Mr Pickering attended the school between 1934 and 1938 when it was the Market Harborough Grammar School.

He visited the school on Friday to unveil a photograph of him and headteacher Colin Dean which was taken during a prior visit to the school.

Mr Dean said: “We are delighted and proud of Tony’s connection with the academy and are very grateful to the ‘41 Club for their kind donation.”

The picture has been given to the academy by the Market Harborough ‘41 club and will now take up a prominent position in the foyer of Robert Smyth.
