Fond farewell to Fiona
SHE has been helping brighten the lives of disabled people across Harborough for five years.
But members of the Alternative Choices group have said a reluctant but fond farewell to Fiona Smith after she decided to call it a day.
The group, for disabled people aged up to 70, meets each Thursday for outings, to listen to a range of speakers, or get involved in fun activities.
For many of its service users, the weekly session is their only day out and Mrs Smith said it has been her job over the past five years to make that day as fun and interesting as possible.
“I organised the programme of events to ensure it was varied as well as stimulating and enjoyable,” said Mrs Smith.
Mrs Smith, who joined the group after answering an advert in the Mail, said she dcided to leave to look for a job with more hours.
She was presented with an engraved pen and notebook as well as a bouquet during the group’s Christmas bash as a thank you for her hard work over the years.
“It was a very sociable and rewarding job, really satisfying and great fun too.
“I was sad to say goodbye. I’ll miss them but I’m certainly going to go back to keep tabs on them!”
Group chairman Tony Colley said the group was looking for a new co-ordinator.
He said: “Fiona did an exceptionally good job and we will miss her, no doubt about it.
“It’s a big help to these people. They only get out once a week in most cases so it is a lifeline for them.
“It would be a rewarding job for anyone who wanted to take it on.”
