ASKING people for the time along a street in Harborough is no longer necessary after the owner of a jewellery store installed a clock above his shop.

Tim Thornton of T J Thornton Jewellers in Coventry Road decided to instal the clock at street level to allow passers by to tell the time without having to check their mobile phones and watches first.

Although Mr Thornton comes from four generations of jewellers, his family is descended from a watch and clock repairer.

The clock is also a celebration of the shop’s fast approaching fifth year in its Coventry Road premises in Harborough.

The clock, which Mr Thornton says is the only street level clock in town, was made by Smiths of Derby and has the name of the jewellers on it.

Mr Thornton said: “As we approach our fifth year in Coventry Road, we wanted to celebrate in a permanent way, and it seemed fitting to have a clock made to our design outside the premises, especially as I am a fourth generation jeweller descended from a watch and clock repairer.”

The jewellers sells antique and modern jewellery as well as vintage and pre-owned time pieces.

Mr Thornton said: “The clock designer said you will be amazed at how many people will aim to look at a clock. It is something for the people of Harborough to see what the time is.”
