A LONG-serving member of a Lutterworth fundraising club was surprised with a celebratory lunch to thank her for her years of sterling work in the community.

Elaine Turner, who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Lutterworth since 2000, has served on numerous fundraising committees, organised plant fairs and helped run gardening courses for students at the Lutterworth Enterprise Centre.

She was given her surprise meal on Monday and presented with top Rotary honour, the Paul Harris Award for her outstanding achievement.

She thought the day was going to be a tour around the Enterprise Centre for Rotary

Peter Osborn, a fellow Lutterworth Rotarian, said: “In addition to her other work, Elaine took a very active part in the club’s Santa Fun Run held in November and has now thrown herself into organising a knitting campaign (see right) to knit teddies for children in war-torn parts of the world.

“Outside Rotary, Elaine is just as active – being a governor at Lutterworth College and a volunteer with the Riding for the Disabled group, and she is still treasurer for the Gladiola Society after 17 years.”

Elaine said she was delighted to receive the award.

4ANYONE who can spare time to knit a small teddy bear which will be sent to small children in war-torn countries is being asked to get in touch with the Rotary Club of Lutterworth.

Doctors in the developing world are asking for the bears, as they have found that children who have their own teddies to cuddle in their cots recover more quickly.

Some of the teddy bears are also given to the fire service and police force to hand out in the UK.

Each child gets to keep their own teddy.

To help the initiative, phone Elaine Turner on 01455 553425 for patterns or to donate wool and materials.
