Drumming marathon for a deserving cause

A DRUM marathon has been organised by a teenager in aid of a cancer charity that helped him when he was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of seven.
Ben Smith (13) struggled with the disease for around three years although he is now doing well and planning a fundraiser to support the charity Children With Cancer.
Ben has asked his friend and fellow drummer Greg Burns (15) who he knows through the Wilbarston-based community band Youth Brass 2000, if he would help him with the sponsored drum marathon.
They will drum continuously for six hours at St Dionysius Church on Saturday, December 15 and the pair are aiming to raise £1,000 for the charity.
Ben, who lives in Kettering, said: “Me and my friend both really like drumming.
“I was just sitting in a rehearsal and just suddenly came up with the idea.
“Throughout my three years of treatment I had continuous support from charities – one of which was Children with Cancer (formally know as Children with Leukaemia). My past has inspired me and my friend Greg to do something to repay the charity for what they’ve done for me.”
Children With Cancer is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against all childhood cancers.
Ben expects that the six- hour stint will be tough going for both of them, but he is determined that they will definitely succeed.
The boys will take it in turns to drum in half hour slots.
Greg said: “We’re aiming to raise £1,000.”
