Driver who died in road crash was over limit, inquest is told

A FARMER who died in an accident near Arnesby last year was not wearing a seatbelt and was driving at almost two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit, an inquest heard.

Calum Tensfeldt , who lived on a farm near Countesthorpe, was partially thrown from his Peugeot 106 and trapped under its roof after the crash in Lutterworth Road shortly before midnight on Sunday, September 18.

A passing motorist stopped to help at the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save Mr Tensfeldt.

The inquest at Leicester Town Hall heard a statement from Mr Tensfeldt’s friend Ross Mason, who said the 21-year-old had been out on the Friday and Saturday night.

He had been assaulted at about 4am on Sunday morning in Leicester city centre.

In the statement, Mr Mason said he and Mr Tensfeldt had worked on Mr Tensfeldt’s family farm on the day of his death before going to the pub for lunch.

They had about two pints and in the evening went to The Plough, in Bruntingthorpe, where Mr Tensfeldt had another pint.

Mr Mason said he left the pub at about 10.30pm and that Mr Tensfeldt knew the road home very well – and he would often drive on back roads without wearing a seatbelt.

Pathologist Dr Stuart Hamilton said Mr Tensfeldt had been suffocated by the weight of the car.

He said tests showed he had 220mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood – the legal limit is 80mg.

Accident investigator PC Michael Hinton said the crash had happened at about 11.40pm when Mr Tensfeldt’s car had gone straight at a tight left bend and crashed into a ditch before hitting a tree and flipping onto its roof.

PC Hinton said there was no evidence that Mr Tensfeldt was speeding.

Det Con Adam Sparrow confirmed that Mr Tensfeldt had been the victim of an assault earlier that day but the inquest was told his injuries would not have impaired his ability to drive.

Coroner Donald Coutts-Wood recorded a verdict of accidental death.
