Doris is back in saddle after shops rally round

A 75-YEAR-OLD Lutterworth woman whose prized bike was stolen has been helped back onto the saddle thanks to the efforts of two town centre shopkeepers.

Doris Herbert’s bike was stolen from outside the Morrisons supermarket in Bitteswell Road on July 30.

At the time, police released CCTV images of a young man riding the bike who they wanted to trace.

The bike was later recovered, although it had been damaged during its ordeal.

On Monday, Mrs Herbert was presented with her repaired and refurbished bike by Russ Haines, of Lutterworth Cycle Centre in George Street, and Andy Milner, of Lutterworth Cobblers in Church Street, who had spent the last couple of weeks fixing up the Raleigh Shopper – which had been a gift from Mrs Herbert’s late mother.

The cycle shop repaired the bike itself while the cobblers repaired the pedal straps and saddle bag.

Mrs Herbert said she was delighted to be able to use the bike for shopping trips once again.

She added: “Everyone has been so wonderful. I’m very grateful to them.”

PCSO Ray Wells, who helped Mrs Herbert carry her shopping home after the theft, said: “I’m still hoping we can trace the thief – although I’m very pleased Mrs Herbert has her bike back.”

The suspect was about 15 and was wearing blue jeans and a blue hooded top with a distinctive rectangular, coloured logo.

Anyone with information is urged to phone police on 101, or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous, on 0800 555111.

The CCTV images can be found at www.leics.police.uk.
