A DARTS player who organised a 24-hour arrows-a-thon smashed his target of raising £500 for charity.

Dean Griffin (38), of Hillcrest Avenue, Kibworth, organised the event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

They have so far raised more than £1,200.

The charity was chosen by Mr Griffin because his wife Helen’s grandfather received help from Macmillan.

The darts marathon was held at The Railway pub in the village from Friday, August 24, until Saturday, August 25.

Mr Griffin said: “It was brilliant. It was really hard work but we reached our £500 target, and, on an initial count-up, we think we nearly trebled it to £1,200.”

The darts board was kept in use for 24 hours and some players managed to stay awake throughout.

Mr Griffin said there was a great deal of support from the community, with businesses providing raffle prizes and people coming to watch and sponsor them during the attempt.

He is now planning another fundraiser for next year - an all-day pool tournament.

It is still possible to sponsor the team by visiting www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/railwaypub.
