A CRICKET match was held on Sunday in memory of the former landlord of a Walcote pub who died in June.

Alan Swalwell was the landlord of the Tavern Inn in the village and people came together to raise money for a number of good causes in his memory.

The match on Sunday took place at Lutterworth Cricket Club and was organised by Walcote Cricket Club.

Kate Green, one of the organisers said that it was a brilliant afternoon’s cricket and thanked everyone involved including Lutterworth Cricket Club for allowing the use of their facilities.

She said: “We raised a total of £301.32 on the day.”

She added that the funds had been boosted by putting a sometimes dubious fining system in operation which led to more money being raised on the day.

Nigel Reeves and Neil Partridge opened the batting for Walcote who scored a total of 187 for seven.

Nigel Reeves and Lee Grewcock retired on 50.

Lutterworth’s bowling performance of the day was from Ben Watson (5-0-18-1) although Ollie Ansell took three wickets.

Alex Hill and Ollie Ansell opened the batting for Lutterworth.

The top scorer for Lutterworth was Jack Martinez with 37.

Walcote’s top bowler was Seph Green (5-2-12-1).

People were encouraged to bring their own picnic to the event and there was a bouncy castle there for children to enjoy on the day.

Kate said: “The charities chosen are a hospice in Scarborough plus local charities working with children, ie Rainbows (Leicestershire) and local sport-related interests for children which Alan himself would have supported.”

Those who still want to add to the money raised by the event can call in to the Tavern Inn, in Lutterworth Road.

Alternatively, people can phone Tony Watson on 01455 554615.
