Councillors opt to consult on town council idea

THE PROSPECT of a review into whether to establish a town council in Harborough moved a step closer this week.

Members of Harborough District Council discussed on Monday proposals to launch what is known as a Community Governance Review in to the possibility.

It was agreed a detailed report be brought back to council ahead of a review, which would involve consultation.

Town councils have only limited powers, but receive a budget with which to manage amenities.

If given the go-ahead, the establishment of a town council would likely see the introduction of a town mayor.

Lutterworth has one but the town of Market Harborough does not. The mayor of Lutterworth, Rob Coleman, told the Mail last week a town council gives people a chance to scrutinise local issues more closely.
