Concern over takeaway’s late-night opening plans

PLANS to extend opening hours and install new illuminated signs at a Lutterworth takeaway have drawn objections from the town council.

Councillors say the plans for Rivali, in Central Avenue, will impact on nearby residents.

They have sent their objections to Harborough District Council, which must decide on whether to grant permission.

The planning applications was discussed at a meeting of Lutterworth Town Council’s Planning and Grants Committee on September 3.

The proposals, submitted by Abdalla Khalifa, of Coventry, apply for planning permission to extend the takeaway’s opening hours to 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays and to midnight from Mondays to Thursdays, Sundays and on bank and public holidays.

In a separate application, permission to install two illuminated signs on the front of the shop is sought.

A third application asks restrospective permission for a red external shutter.

At the town council planning meeting, members strongly objected to both the opening hours and illuminated signs proposals on the basis the shop is in a residential area.

In his application, Mr Khalifa says the takeaway is new and that extending the opening hours will improve business.

But town councillors said they fear the later opening hours will cause disturbance to residents, while the sign will create light pollution.

They supported the application for the shutters, but requested a more neutral colour in-keeping with the other shops.

Planning and Grants Committee chair Cllr Eileen Derrick told the Mail after the meeting: “The people living in close proximity to the shop were very much in mind when the decisions were made.”
