College plans to launch innovative new school

A NEW type of cutting-edge school in which students will spend half a day a week in the workplace could be opened in Lutterworth next year.

Lutterworth College has applied to the Department for Education (DfE) to open the so-called Studio School in September next year.

The Studio School would combine academic and vocational education and would cater for about 300 students when it is full.

It would be the first school of its kind in the county, although Hinckley College is affiliated with a similar project in Warwickshire.

The Lutterworth idea has already recived backing from a number of firms willing to take on students – who would be based in the workplace for a half-day session each week at GCSE level and two days a week at post-16 – including engineering firms Babcock and Trelleborg, distribution firm DHL and Kilworth Springs Golf Club and Hotel.

Lutterworth College principal Andrew Cooper said: “The college has a strong track record of offering cutting-edge applied learning to students, allowing young people to learn in practical ways. Much of the learning will be project-based where knowledge, skills and understanding will be developed in answering realistic commercial and industrial briefs or projects.”

Mr Cooper said the college had decided to submit their application after researching the needs of the economy in the future.

He added: “We aim to provide students with a real choice in their education.

“By attending the Studio School, students will receive the very best in academic and vocational learning alongside working with major international and national industry and local businesses to develop skills in work-based learning.”

Mr Cooper said the DfE is currently considering the college’s application.

He added: “If the Studio School application is successful it would be sited in Lutterworth but premises are yet to be decided and various options are being explored.

“This could entail extension of existing facilities at Lutterworth College or the refurbishment of existing buildings in Lutterworth as we have already done with our very successful Enterprise Centre.

“The Lutterworth Studio School will be an institution in its own right and as such we will seek to employ well-qualified staff.”
