Cinema dreams kept alive by meeting

AN AUSTRALIAN businessman hoping to turn Harborough's former Kwik Save site into a cinema said a meeting to discuss the proposal with the building's owners has gone well.

John Sullivan, owner of The Light digital cinema firm, wants to put a six-screen digital cinema on the land, possibly as part of a scheme to build a media centre in partnership with South Leicestershire College.

And following a meeting with the building’s owners Alislane on Monday, Mr Sullivan told Harborough cinema campaigner Alastair Campbell that he was hopeful of doing business with them.

Mr Campbell told the Mail: “No decision was ever going to be made during the meeting but they had a very open dialogue and discussed different ideas and both have gone away to think about the different options.

“John has told me he left feeling he could definitely do business with Alislane.”

Campaigners backed by an 8,000 signature petition have been calling for the Northampton Road site, which housed the Ritz cinema between 1939 and 1978, to be turned back into a cinema.

Kwik Save was the last occupier but the building has lain empty and fallen into disrepair since the supermarket chain left in June 2005.

Alislane was last month granted permission to partially demolish the building and build a shops and retirement flats complex.

But Mr Sullivan’s meeting with Alislane has given campaigners cause to believe their cinema dream has not yet faded.

Mr Campbell added: “This is not something which is going to happen in the next few weeks.

“There are so many options as to what to do at the site that it’s going to be reasonably complex and may take months. However, it’s looking positive.”
