Cinema call goes international
A CAMPAIGN to give Harborough its own cinema for the first time in nearly 30 years has received an international response from supporters.
A petition to turn the former Kwik Save building in Northampton Road back into a cinema was launched last month by two determined 11-year-olds from Harborough, Mollie Drewry and Lucy Seaward.
The campaign snowballed and last week the Mail exclusively revealed that the building’s London-based owners Alislane are willing to sell the land, with three investors interested in putting a cinema there.
And while developers have been viewing the site this week, people from as far afield as New Zealand and Pennsylvania have continued to sign the petition online at www.harboroughcinema.com.
PR expert Alastair Campbell, who has been driving the Harborough cinema campaign, said that about 4,500 people have signed the petition so far and added: “Obviously most of the people who have signed up are from the town and surrounding villages, but the word about the campaign has spread.”
Commenting on the online petition, former Harborough resident Michael Jackson, now living in New Zealand, said: “I remember watching the Jungle Book there as a kid. They protect buildings like this in New Zealand so let’s hope the old Ritz can be saved. Good luck with the campaign.”
Other people from overseas who have signed the petition include Stephen Williams, from Pennsylvania, Andy Chan, from Seattle and Allan Wilkinson, of Wellington, in New Zealand.
Mr Campbell said the last projectionist to work at the cinema before it closed in 1978 – Bob Jacobs – had also contacted the campaign by email from his home in Spain and added: “Stories of it have been posted in national and international newsletters and websites dedicated to saving cinemas. Perhaps we have grown used to seeing the building as an old supermarket or an eyesore and not the historic building it really is.”
