A SUMMER of sport for the annals has inspired people to leap off the sofa and join sports clubs here in Harborough and now the Mail is celebrating the sporting achievements of teams and individuals from the district.

Sports clubs have reported a boost in membership thanks to the London 2012 Olympics and British wins in the Tour de France and a tennis Grand Slam final.

There has been success here in Harborough too – on the pitch, on the track and on the field.

The Mail is proud to again celebrate these achievements with its annual Sports Awards which is now in the 11th year.

People can now nominate people by filling in a nomination form in the Mail or online at our dedicated Sports Awards 2012 website.

So far the Mail has received several entries for the awards in a number of different categories.

Just one of these entries is in the category of Sports Team of the Year.

Market Harborough Squash Club 1st Team has been nominated by Alison Avil of Coventry Road, Harborough. She said the club nearly withdrew from the Northants 1st division but that a new member to the club, Simon Turner, pressed them forward and stepped in to run the side.

With the help of Callum Fraser, Jack Turney and Hari Patel, all under the age of 22, the team went on to win Division 1 for only the second time in the club’s history.

She said: “This was a tremendous turn-around and revitalised the 1st team. The team played consistently good squash through the season with a good blend of old and young.

“They are now looking forward to trying to defend their title and perhaps this season go for the double.”
