A SURFING champion who hails from Great Bowden will be one of the privileged few to tackle one of the world’s most dangerous waves.

Harry Timson will this week attempt to surf the Pipeline wave in Hawaii during an under-21s contest. The huge wave is reputed to have claimed more lives than any other surf spot in the world.

Now 16, Harry first took to a surf board when he was just three years old while on a family holiday down to Newquay in Cornwall.

He continued to go there regularly on family holidays until his mum Charlotte and dad Vince decided to move there permanently when Harry was eight.

Vince said: “We have got some photos of him surfing when he was three on some nice clean waves and he pretty much just got hooked.”

Harry started competing from a young age in surfing contests and has won every age category of the British championships that he has entered.

Although just 16, he already holds four British Surf titles and is the current under-18 British Champion.

He has competed for Britain at the last three World Junior Championships, is ranked 22nd in the under-16s and was the best Brit at the last World Juniors in Peru.

Sponsorship from Volcom, Errant Surf Holidays, Oakley, Reef, Surf Tech, The Extreme Academy and Snugg means his home schooling, accommodation and travel are paid for.

Harry has spent the best part of two years training with the Volcom team in South West France and Australia.

This week he is set to be the youngest Briton to take on the infamous Pipeline wave in Hawaii.

Dad Vince, who himself has won multiple British and European Power Boat Championships, said: “This is a big surfing achievement, a big achievement.

“I have been surfing myself, I know how dangerous it is. People lose their lives out there but it is what he wants and it is what he lives for.

“We are just really proud of him.”
