Cemetery plan looks set for approval

LUTTERWORTH’S long-awaited plans for a new cemetery are due to be considered by Harborough District Council’s planning committee tonight (Tuesday).

The scheme, which is combined with a plan to build 130 new homes on land off Coventry Road at Leaders Farm, looks set to get the nod as planning officers have recommended it for approval.

If councillors back the officers’ recommendation, the new 1.2 hectare cemetery will resolve the crisis over the declining space left at the town’s existing cemetery behind St Mary’s Church – which is expected to be filled in less than a year.

The land at Leaders Farm has had a complicated recent history – it has been highlighted as a potential cemetery site two decades ago by Lutterworth Town Council but the land is owned by Leicestershire County Council which had earmarked it for employment use, which had driven up the price.

As part of the plan, about 40 homes will be earmarked as ‘affordable’ housing.

Harborough District Council is asking for a number of conditions on the application, including that all the homes be provided with bus passes for six months, to encourage public transport use.

Last year, the Mail reported that a number of residents in Cunningham Drive felt that the cemetery should be sited at the eastern edge of Leaders Farm, rather than the western edge. However, the plans show the cemetery is still at the western part of the site.
