Catalogue firm to move jobs to Lutterworth

A CATALOGUE firm could be creating hundreds of new jobs at Magna Park, near Lutterworth, but only at the expense of employees in Northamptonshire.

National chain Argos this week announced it was leaving its distribution site in Corby and moving the facility to Magna Park in autumn this year.

Argos already has a warehouse at Magna Park but the firm said it was too early to say how many new jobs would be created there.

The announcement affects 440 workers at the Northamptonshire site, which is owned by Wincanton, although they are to be offered the opportunity to relocate to Magna Park.

In a statement, Argos said: “We propose to reconfigure our Argos distribution centre in Magna Park and exit the Wincanton-managed operation in Corby, to reduce network costs and create a better balance between the flow of goods to and from the midlands.

“Subject to colleague consultation, it is proposed that this work will commence in the summer and be complete by the autumn.

“All affected employees are eligible to transfer to the Argos site at Magna Park.”

The Argos announcement marks the second time in recent weeks that jobs from other parts of the midlands have relocated to Magna Park.

Haulage firm Stobart said it was closing facilities in Corby and Warwickshire to create more than 100 jobs at its planned new Magna Park warehouse.

The Stobart Group was given planning permission for the new development at the former George clothing site two weeks ago and is planning to begin work later this year.
