Browns attend memorial service of Vidal Sassoon
THE manager of a hair salon in Harborough attended the memorial service of British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon.
Toby Brown and Harry Brown of Brown’s Hairdressing Group which has a salon in Harborough attended the memorial on Friday, October 12 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
The service began at 10.57 when the choir entering the cathedral.
A reading was then read by Canon Michael Colclough who spoke about Vidal’s life, family and friends and of his humble beginning as an orphan.
Harry Brown said: “We then all stood up and read out the Lord’s Prayer. After we all sang a hymn written by John Hughes.
“It was then the turn of Nicholas Vega a close friend to Vidal to read a short poem.
“An address was then given by The Lord Puttnam CBE a childhood friend of Vidal.
“Mr Jeremy Irons then came to the stage and read out another poem “To an athlete dying young from a Shropshire lad” A.E.houseman (1859-1936)
“We all then stood and sang a hymn “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” by John Whittier(1807-92).
“There was then an address given by Rabbi Julie Neuberger from Vidal’s west London synagogue. And music sang in Jewish echoed St. Paul’s.
“We then heard prayers of intercession from close friends of Vidal: John Frieda, Dennis O’Neil and David Philp.
“It was then the turn of Elan Sassoon to address the many hundreds of people. He spoke about his father’s love of Chelsea football club, this was very emotional for all.”
The service was ended with the hymn Jerusalem.
Mr Brown said that the cathedral was packed with people from all over the world.
Vidal Sassoon died on May 9 this year.
