Blue badge rules frustrating mum
Angry...Nicky Goodall with her son Albert (6) is seeking a temporary blue badge after her son broke his leg.
A mum has been left struggling after her request for a temporary blue badge for her wheelchair-bound son was turned down by County Hall.
Nicky Goodall’s six-year-old son Albert has recently undergone a foot operation and is having to use a wheelchair for the next six weeks.
When Nicky approached Leicestershire County Council for a disabled parking pass she was told it did not issue temporary badges.
A frustrated Nicky told the Mail she needs the pass as normal parking spaces do not allow room for wheelchairs down the side of the car.
It is a struggle for her doing the shopping and dropping her other three children off at activities without being able to use disabled parking bays.
Now Nicky, who lives in Tower Court, Lubenham, is calling on the county council to change its rules and has written to Harborough MP Sir Edward Garnier asking for his help.
She said: “It may be too late for me now but it is going to happen to someone else.
“I’m not going to be the first or the last. It is ridiculous.
“Parking bays have got a picture of a wheelchair in the space but I can’t park there.
“I’ve got a wheelchair in the car.”
A spokesman for Leicestershire County Council said the decision was out of its hands: “We are sorry to hear about the circumstances of this case and wish the young man a speedy recovery.
“We administer the Disabled Persons’ Parking (Blue Badge) scheme on behalf of the Government and, unfortunately, we don’t have the power to issue a blue badge in respect of temporary disabilities.”
