A STUNT to highlight the importance of having regular checks at the opticians will see the chairman of Harborough District Council walk through the town blindfolded.

The event will mark World Sight Day and has been organised by John Bush and the Market Harborough branch of the Lions club.

John Everett, chairman of Harborough District Council and councillor for Misteron, will walk blindfold from The Three Swans Hotel to Sainsbury’s at 11am on Thursday (October 11).

Although he will be accompanied by two lions he will have no aids to make the journey.

Mr Everett will not have a stick or a guide dog to rely upon while he walks blindfolded through Harborough’s streets.

He said: “Nothing like that would make me nervous. I’m assuming they won’t let me walk into a lamp post.”

There will be a display at Sainsbury’s, where Cllr Everett will be heading for.

The display will highlight the need for everybody to be aware of the dangers of contracting blindness and to have regular checks at the opticians.

John Bush, of Harborough Lions, said: “The chairman will be blindfolded up by The Three Swans and we will then have a display just inside the foyer of Sainsbury’s.

“It is World Sight Week and World Sight Day on that day. This is our idea for doing it.

“Just blindfolding a personality and walking him around the town. He will have no support apart from a lion at either side of him.

“We hope it will highlight the need for people to have eye tests.”

Mr Bush said eye tests show up eye problems like glaucoma but also high cholesterol.
