Blind walk catches eye

Waiting for Video...

OBSTACLES appeared but failed to detract from the efforts of a blindfold walk through Harborough in its attempt to raise awareness of the importance of having regular eye tests.

The chairman of Harborough District Council, Cllr John Everett, was invited to walk through the town with a blindfold on last Thursday during a busy morning.

The impressive stunt was organised by the Harborough branch of the Lions.

It was hoped that by leading Cllr Everett through town, people would be made more aware of the importance of eye tests.

Eye tests can highlight various problems including glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, inflammation of the cornea, raised cholesterol and diabetes among other things.

Cllr Everett had to navigate two crossings, people passing by, bins, benches and other obstacles.

He said: “I was very much helped by my two Lions friends who stopped me actually walking into anything.

“I was much more aware of the little bobbles you get on the pavement at the crossings. That was very helpful and you became more aware of how helpful it is when you are doing something like this.”

An information board was set up by the Lions outside Sainsbury’s and it was to here that Cllr Everett walked from The Three Swans Hotel.

He said: “I am of an age where eyesight is very important. I have my tests regularly and I hope this promotes awareness of the importance of good eye health for everybody.”
