A CHARITY is urging people in Harborough to bag up any unwanted household items as part of a new campaign.

The Great British Bag-athon campaign by the British Heart Foundation was launched at St Mary’s Place Shopping Centre in town on Saturday, September 1, and is asking for the community to get involved.

The appeal asks people to pull together and raise as many bags of lovely things as possible, which will go on to be sold in the foundation’s shops, helping the fight against heart disease.

The foundation has a branch in Harborough at 1 High Street.

Bags of clothing, toys, accessories, shoes, CDs, DVDs, books, toys and more can be taken to the shop until Friday, September 21, or given to the shop after that date.

Volunteers from the town branch were handing out bags on Saturday during the launch and will be in the shopping centre again this Saturday (September 8).

Helen Coombes, manager at the shop in Harborough, said: “It’s wonderful to see people in the community getting involved in the campaign. Whether groups are getting together to donate five, ten or 20 bags, or individuals are donating just one bag, it’s all extremely gratefully received and will help the foundation to continue its life-saving work.”

Last year the charity’s shops raised more than £31 million and they sell 90,000 items everyday with over 20,000 volunteers helping in stores.

The foundation has more than 700 shops and 140-plus furniture and electrical stores.

For more information on The Great British Bag-athon or to sign up to take the challenge, visit the foundation’s webiste or the Harborough shop in High Street.

People can also phone the shop on 01858 431317 to arrange for their bags to be collected by the team.
