Application for new school is imminent

A FREE School for Harborough will move one step closer in January when an application to site it in town is submitted.

Harborough Free School is now being supported by the Brooke Western Trust which already has a Free School in Corby under its remit.

The project is being spearheaded by teachers Angela Brown and Cristina Taboada-Naya.

They decided to look into a Free School for Harborough as they felt there was not enough choice for parents here.

And now they hope to have submitted an application in time for the January 4 deadline.

It is still necessary, however, for them to show there is a real need for the school in this area by gathering responses from parents indicating that they would be willing to send their children to a Free School.

Mrs Brown said: “We now have backing from the Brooke Western Trust which manages academies in Northamptonshire. They will be providing technical and financial advice and eventually the school will be set up within their academy group.

“We are still seeking responses from parents.

“We have had lots of responses from people and the people that are responding to us think there is a need for a new school in Harborough.”

Mrs Brown said the need for a Free School seems all the more important given the announcement of potentially 1,800 new homes which could be built at the Airfield Farm site in Harborough.

She said that as well as having the support of the Brooke Western Trust they have also gained support from Harborough MP Sir Edward Garnier.

Once their application is processed, Mrs Brown said it could be up and running in less than a year.

Mrs Brown and Mrs Taboada-Naya have more than 20 years’ experience in teaching between them.

Their vision for the school is that it would cater for children aged from 11 through to 18.

The school would offer a curriculum not dissimilar to that which is offered by other independent schools.

They are asking that people respond to say whether they would welcome a Free School.
