A LUTTERWORTH school has been praised for its work in promoting racial equality and tolerance.

Lutterworth High School achieved a milestone when, at the end of last term, it was awarded the Stephen Lawrence Education Standard, Level 1.

The award was established in October 2003 in response to the tragic murder of the 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence, who was killed in 1993, with the intention of highlighting racial equality.

Nora Parker, high school head teacher, said: “The assessment procedure is always rigorous and to have such positive feedback was especially gratifying.

“Governors, staff and students prepared very well for the award.

“I am delighted that the culture of tolerance and racial equality which permeates the school has been recognised in a powerful way.

“The award will undoubtedly help us to make sure that we continue to embed the culture of respect and tolerance for all into all aspects of school life.

“Achieving this award will make us doubly determined to ensure that we continue to have a learning environment where the mantra ‘all different, all equal’ sits at the heart.”

Mrs Parker said students were equally pleased and felt that achieving the award emphasised how much they respect and value each other.

Year 8 student Rachel Young said: “We are very proud that our school achieved the award and it’s good to know that we do all we can to stop bullying and racism and make sure everyone has the same opportunities, and is treated equally.”
