A PROJECT to start a community allotment open to groups and individuals in Lutterworth got off the ground on Saturday when an open day was held.

The new allotment is being run in partnership between the Getting Lutterworth Growing group and Lutterworth Town Council.

The two teamed up earlier this year to put their name on a waiting list for a plot at the De Verdon Road allotments.

They want to engage community groups to give them an opportunity to grow some of their own produce but the plots also offer individuals an opportunity to see what running an allotment is like before they put their name on the waiting list for their own plot.

The open day on Saturday was aimed at getting people interested in the new project while also helping to prepare the plot for planting later in the season.

Bob Howes, a town councillor who is one of the people behind the project, said: “We opened on Saturday with ten willing helpers coming along to start the work of clearing the plot later in the season.

“They were blessed with fine weather that was not too warm.

“There was much to clear and plenty of digging. Luckily, an extensive barbecue was also provided for the weary toilers.”

Anyone who wants more information about the community allotment or who would like to get involved with the project is asked to phone Alison Wood at Lutterworth Town Council on 01455 550225.

Cllr Howes added: “The plan is to offer help, guidance and equipment for all the groups who want to be a part of it. We have received a grant from Leicestershire County Council.”
