Academy canteen open to community

A SCHOOL is holding an open event to show off its £1m catering training and dining facility.

The purpose-built Sixteen07 building was opened at Harborough’s Robert Smyth Academy in February last year, replacing its old Nissen-hut style canteen as well as providing a teaching area for pupils studying a new hospitality and catering diploma.

Now the school is promoting it as a function room for hire by the community.

The school will host an open event in November, exact date to be confirmed, to show off the facility.

Deputy head Phil Pope said: “I think it would be ideal for business seminars or training or social events because it’s a big open space and we can move the tables around.

“We’ve used it ourselves for exhibitions, staff training and prize-giving functions. It has audio-visual facilities and is in a nice setting. It’s a really nice venue.”

The name of the building, which sits at the southern edge of the school site, is taken from the founding date of Harborough’s Old Grammar School.

It has been available for use by the community since it opened but Robert Smyth, which converted to academy status in September last year, wants to promote its use.

Mr Pope said: “The head teacher Colin Dean will give a presentation at the openoing day and people will be invited for refreshments and for a look around.”

To register to attend the open evening, email pope@rsacademy.co.uk or phone the school on 01858 440770, referencing sixteen07.
