AN UP-and-coming tennis talent is getting up close to the world’s best players after being chosen as a ball-girl for the prestigious end-of-season tournament at the 02 arena.

Harborough teenager Abby Amos, who is a member of Harborough Tennis Club in Great Bowden and the Roundhill club in Leicester, is one of only 32 from an original entry of 2,500 to be selected as a Barclays Ball Kid for the ATP World Tour Finals at London’s O2, which started on Monday.

The competition features the top eight highest-ranked players in the men’s game such as world number one Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Britian’s Olympic champion Andy Murray.

Only Rafael Nadal is missing from this year’s top eight, due to injury.

Abby passed through both regional and national trials before going through a tough week of training in Southampton in preparation for the event.

Murray, who also won the US Open in an outstanding 2012, is taking part and won his opening match on Monday.

Abby said: “It has been amazing so far and the best experience I have ever had.”

The 15-year-old, who has enjoyed successes herself on the tennis court, added: “I am really happy to have the opportunity to do this.

“It is a lot harder than it looks. We have had some intense training but it is all worth it.”

Abby is a top ten-ranked county junior who reached the national finals of the Aegon National Summer Tour last year.
