A sea of Santas will take to the streets

ORGANISERS of an annual fun run around Lutterworth are hoping to attract a sea of Santas as they attempt to break the 1,000 competitor mark.

The annual Santa Fun Run, which this year is being held on Sunday, December 2, has become a regular fixture in the town’s social calendar and is now in its fourth year.

The event is organised in partnership between the town’s two Rotary Clubs and raises money for several charities and good causes.

Last year, the clubs had been hoping to attract more than 1,000 runners, but fell agonisingly close when 980 Father Christmas-clad runners took to the streets, raising £14,000 for charity in the process.

Peter Osborn, from the Rotary Club of Lutterworth, said a few changes had been made this year as the club tries to reach the 1,000 runner milestone.

He added: “New for 2012 is the fact that we have two routes. Route one is 5.7 kilometres and route two is 3.2 kilometres – you choose which one to follow on the day. The event being linked to the switch-on of the town Christmas lights on Friday, November 30. The weekend will herald the festive season in Lutterworth.”

The event is designed to appeal to people of all ages and ability. Participants run, jog or walk the route with decorated mobility scooters also being welcomed.

All competitors start and finish at Lutterworth College. The route takes runners along Bitteswell Road, Brookfield Way and into Coventry Road. Runners on the short route will then return to the college while those on the longer route turn right into Woodway Road and run through the south of the town before returning to the college.

Charities and good causes benefiting this year include the Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Rutland Air Ambulance, Age Concern Lutterworth, the Lutterworth Mayor’s Appeal and Rotary-supported charities, among others.

Entry to the event is £10 for adults and £4 for children aged under 16. Everyone who enters is given a Santa outfit, hat and beard which they keep after the run.
