A BY-ELECTION could be held in Lutterworth after a town councillor for the Swift Ward announced he is to step down.

Tristan Koriya was voted into his seat on the town council at an election in May last year, but said he has accepted a new job which means he will be unable to continue the role.

Mr Koriya, who works as a solicitor for a firm in Northampton, will be working for Thompsons’ Solicitors and based in Plymouth.

He said: “I have very much enjoyed my time working alongside the other members at Lutterworth Town Council, but my new job means I am unable to continue to represent the ward.”

Cllr Koriya officially stepped down last Wednesday when he handed in his letter of resignation.

A spokesman for Lutterworth Town Council said: “A by-election to fill the vacancy left by Cllr Koriya’s resignation will be held if ten electors for the Swift Ward give notice in writing by August 31 claiming such an election to the Returning Officer.

“The address of the Returning Officer is: Harborough District Council, Council Offices, Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 7AG.

“If no such notice is given the Town Council will be able to fill the vacancy by co-option.”

Cllr Koriya is the second councillor to step down from the town council since the elections, which were held in May 2011.

Michael O’Connell, a councillor in the Springs Ward, was elected uncontested at that election but stepped down from the position just a few months later, citing ill health.

He was later replaced by Cllr Ian Staples, who was co-opted to join the council.
